Keep your training current and make sure it fits the work you do, the equipment you carry, and the state where you work. EPS has two October training options for security officers and the companies that employ them.

MARYLAND GUARD VIRTUAL: $140

Maryland security guard certification requires 12 hours of approved initial security training, with an exception for qualifying recent police employment. EPS offers a 12-hour initial course taught live on Google Meet and delivered through Metropolitan Protective Service, Inc. (MPSI), which appears on the state's list of approved initial programs.

Thursday and Friday, October 1–2, 2026, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Eastern both days. Training covers legal authority, emergency protocols, de-escalation and report writing. Both days are required.

Renewing? Maryland State Police asks for renewal applications at least 90 days before expiration. Guards who have not completed the 12-hour initial course must complete it for renewal. If you already completed it, renewal requires 8 hours of approved continuing training, so call EPS before booking. Course completion does not itself issue a state guard card. State approval and the application process are separate.

LESS-LETHAL HYBRID: $150

OC spray, expandable baton and handcuffing training combines online coursework with hands-on practical training and scenario-based evaluation. The online portion covers Maryland use-of-force law, the force continuum and articulation. A certificate and digital badge are issued on completion.

In-person practical: Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at EPS in Lanham, Maryland. Choose the 11 a.m.–3 p.m. or 3:15–7:15 p.m. Eastern session. Complete the online coursework before your practical session.

Enroll once through the course link below, then call (410) 525-5775 to confirm your October 6 practical time. Already enrolled? Contact EPS to confirm your session. Do not buy the course again through a separate booking page.

WORKING OUTSIDE MARYLAND?

Less-lethal requirements vary by state and locality. California, for example, requires separate training for on-duty tear gas and training from a Bureau-approved facility for on-duty baton carry. One course certificate does not authorize carrying or using these tools nationwide. Check your regulator's requirements, state and local law, employer policy, and equipment-specific training requirements. Call EPS to confirm course fit before enrolling or arranging travel.

Questions or team training? Call (410) 525-5775 or use the EPS contact page.
